The Times of Southwest Louisiana, June 6, 2003, 'The Shadow'
With that, our Mistress of
Ceremonies, the witty and sassy Sheletta
Smith of KPLC, said, It's joke time! It's time to honor Elcie Guillory
and have some fun. She noted that she needed a haircut before the event
tonight, and since Rep. Guillory is a barber, she went to him. She had us in
stitches with her quick retorts and funny stories about Rep. Guillory as a
barber!
Sheletta started the fun by roasting the first roaster, Sen. Willie Mount with her introduction, Willie is a home girl! She is trying to pass — her roots are like mine, really, under all that blond hair! Sen. Mount was cracking up! The crowd loved it. Sheletta told us, She is always on our side, she really loves Lake Charles! As she took the podium, Sen. Mount noted, That is a hard introduction to follow! Sheletta had set the bar for humor very high.
But Sen. Mount, as always, was up to the challenge. With her hat in hand she told us, Last year the Governor called Elcie to discuss closing Moss Regional. Elcie went not with his hat in his hand, but on his head! And when he left the Governor was spitting nails. Elcie Guillory just kept saying, 'No Cuts!' The Governor offered him a great duck hunt and a trip to play cards and fishing trips. Elcie kept saying, 'No Cuts!' Finally --the 'top of the line' goody from the Governor was the Big Hog -- the greatest Harley ever ridden, with or without a helmet! Elcie told him to put it back in Franklin, tipped his hat and said, No Cuts to Moss Regional!' And guess what? she teased us. You don't see any 'For Sale' signs at Moss Regional! We loved it!
She ended her roast with, Elcie always has time for his constituents. He is a gentleman who's hardworking and serves with compassion. He is not a politician, but a true representative of the people. I tip my Fedora to you, Elcie. You are a special man and I love you! We gave them a standing ovation.
Sheletta took the podium and told Sen. Mount, You gotta stop there, or you gonna make us cry! So true! So she cracked, Did I tell you the Senator is one-eighteenth sister? I welcome her into the family. We'll be meeting at Juneteenth! and Sen. Mount nodded in agreement, laughing.
Next up to roast the
representative, Sheletta told us, is 'Double R' — Mayor Randy
Roach!The mayor also joked
about Elcie's barbering skills. There is a line and there is an edge. If
Elcie didn't like you, the line was not quite right! You could tell if you sat
in the back of the church, 'Elcie likes that one...not that one!' Well, everyone
here likes Elcie, Mayor Roach told us, getting serious. Elcie
Guillory is a true gentleman. Our young people should try to emulate his
character, compassion and love of people.
